2018 - Shakespeare’s Canon

2018 saw Southside Drama combining with experienced members of Shoestring Theatre Group from Waiuku at Off Broadway Theatre for a masterclass. Douglas chose to challenge these experienced actors with a production that would focus more on acting and less on the number of lines to learn, although the three main characters still had substantial line learning. Douglas Roberts wrote Shakespeare’s Canon, where 16 students played 93 different characters during the performance.

Shakespeare’s Canon romps through at least six of Shakespeare’s plays harvesting the best speeches and situations to be found there. It also attempts to insert two characters in search of roles, but who continually find themselves killed off in the first few scenes. Will himself becomes more and more exasperated until he eventually finds the perfect play for them. All seems to be well, but it still doesn’t end well.
